Zhong Kui, often referred to as "Spirit Hunter" or "King of Spirits" is a heroic figure who commands 80,000 soldiers and fight evil. He is said to be a large man, with a black beard, bulging eyes with a fierce expression. His intense look is said to terrify malevolent spirits, driving them away. Once an exceptional scholar, he was denied the highest honors due to his unattractive appearance. This caused him to take his own life. Lord of Underworld recognized his intelligence and bestowed him the title "True Lord who Guards the Household"
Zhong Kui has a group of subordinates called "Wu Gui". They are also believed to bring wealth and good fortune. According to tradition, Zhong Kui can direct these energies to ward off bad luck while attracting prosperity for those who honor him.
